Hey guys, happy Halloween! When it comes to eating healthy, I'd like to think that I've got it down (to see extent) and definitely know how to make and suggest some clean eating swaps. Especially with this holiday..sugary treats are at the forefront!
It’s easy to say “I want to eat clean” but how do you actually do it? Start with these simple swaps:
Grains: swap out rice for quinoa or cauliflower rice, and pasta for spaghetti squash or zoodles (zucchini noodles). Swap out tortillas or bread for lettuce wraps.
Oils: swap out canola oil for extra virgin coconut oil, toasted sesame, flaxseed, or extra virgin olive oil.
Condiments: swap out for herbs and spices like turmeric, cayenne pepper, basil. If you're missing ketchup, try Tessamae brand's ketchup (all clean ingredients!). Swap mayo out for mashed avocado.
In salads: swap out croutons for walnuts or sunflower and pumpkin seeds. Aim to use just olive oil and balsamic vinegar instead of sugar-filled dressings.
Pizza: swap out pizza dough for cauliflower or quinoa crust.
Sugar: try cacao nibs or 70%+ dark chocolate instead of traditional candy or chocolate, and pure maple syrup or honey for white sugar. If you can even choose dried fruits like mango over candy, even better!
Butters: swap out Skippy's peanut butter for raw, unsalted nut butters like almond or sunflower butter. Toss that chemical rich margarine and try grass fed ghee or butter instead!
Potato chips: swap out oily chips for carrots with hummus or a gluten-free seed cracker (my favorite, Mary’s Gone crackers), or organic Beanitos tortilla chips.
Cereals: swap out traditional sugary cereal for gluten-free rolled oats with fresh berries or my favorite, Purely Elizabeth granola.
Soda: swap out soda for a low-sugar (1-2g per serving) kombucha or sparkling water. For sugary fruit juices, swap with fruit infused water.
What are some of your favorite healthy swaps? I hope these help you on your clean eating journey. Have a happy & healthy rest of your week!
