Did you know that 80% of your immune system is in your gut? Or that 60-80% of the body's anti-bodies are produced in the gut?
When your microbiome is healthy, your immune system works optimally, your mood and energy is balanced, you digest food better (think less gas, bloating, constipation & diarrhea), and you get the essential nutrients your body needs.
A bit about the microbiome: it is a collective group of microbes that regulate inflammation, immunity, production of vitamins, detoxification, carbohydrate metabolism, and production of important neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine. Microbes are tiny organisms (like bacteria, viruses, and fungi) that are essential for a healthy body. Did you know that microbes affect the brain's function every moment? They affect the brain's longterm health and resistance to disease in short and long term being.
Research now shows that there are unique patterns of gut bacteria that correlate to brain disorders & diseases such as migraines, depression and anxiety, even Alzheimer's and Parkinson's Disease.
Fortifying the microbiome will prevent leaky gut and brain health!
Gut health depends on prebiotics, which gut microbes love, and probiotics, which restore the proper balance of bacteria in the gut (and rid the bad bacteria that creates inflammation & toxins).
Prebiotics (are high in soluble fiber):
Bananas, Apples, Berries
Probiotics (provide good gut flora):
Apple cider vinegar
Anti-inflammatory foods soothe and heal your gut (making it a better environment for microbes):
Turmeric & Ginger
Green leafy veggies
Fish high in omega-3's (wild caught mackerel, trout, herring, salmon)
I recommend taking a daily good quality probiotic (on an empty stomach). Some of my favorite brands are with a great probiotic supplement: Garden of Life, Jarrow Formulas, Innate Response, and Pure Encapsulations. Aim for a probiotic supplement that is refrigerated, contains at least 30 different strains and 50 billion live cultures.
We are truly what we eat..so be mindful to incorporate these foods into your diet to keep your gut healthy & happy!
